Spring Island, S.C. – Spring Island and its Old Tabby Links golf course moved up an impressive 15 places to 28th best in Golfweek’s Top 100 Residential golf courses. Long heralded as renowned golf course architect Ed Seay’s lasting legacy, Old Tabby Links at Spring Island has been described by Arnold Palmer as a walk in a nature park to which the game of golf has been subtly introduced. This subtlety was further enhanced by the recent renovation of Old Tabby Links that has been judged an overwhelming success in restoring the natural character of the course and heightening the strategic interest of each hole.

Every year, Golfweek magazine’s panel of golf course raters play and rate literally tens of thousands of golf courses across the country and around the world. From all of these thousands of golf courses, Spring Island ranks 28th. Golfweek isn’t the only group to recognize Spring Island and the success of the renovation, Old Tabby Links was also named Golf Inc. Renovation of the Year.

“We actually didn’t choose Old Tabby Links; we chose Spring Island. While it’s a top-of-the-line golf course, it’s not really a golf-centric community. It’s more nature-centric. It’s 3000-acres, with 400 homesites. Half of the land in a nature conservancy. We chose it for the whole package.”

In the midst of all of these golf accolades Spring Island Member Gary Shimmin summed it up well. When asked “Why Old Tabby Links?” Shimmin replied, “We actually didn’t choose Old Tabby Links; we chose Spring Island. While it’s a top-of-the-line golf course, it’s not really a golf-centric community. It’s more nature-centric. It’s 3000-acres, with 400 homesites. Half of the land in a nature conservancy. We chose it for the whole package.”
