Dear Spring Island Members,
Did you know that in 2019 the U.S. consumed over 40 billion bottles of water? And only about 23% of bottles nationally get recycled, with the remaining bottles end up in landfills On average, Americans consume about 13 bottles per month for every person in the U.S. By using a refillable water bottle you alone could save an average of 156 plastic bottles annually.
When the COVID-19 pandemic began, one of several service modifications implemented to help prevent the spread of the virus was the elimination of plastic water bottles throughout the community. While not the original intent, we were hopeful that this might be a springboard for a lasting change that would result in a significant reduction in our water bottle consumption. Twelve weeks later, we have seen that we can eliminate water bottles around the community and most everyone has embraced the use of refillable bottles!
Earlier this summer, we began installing bottle fillers in several areas around the island. These bottle fillers will provide up to 8 gallons of chilled, filtered water per hour. The technology, construction, and installation of these units offer a far better and safer experience than the units installed several years ago.
Spring Island logoed insulated water bottles and accessories are available for purchase in the Golf Shop and Sports Complex. There will also be less expensive bottles available for sale for guests who may not have one when they visit or for Members who happen to forget to bring one along.
The reduction of the consumption of single-use plastic water bottles is something that everyone should be proud of and is a testament to our ethos and belief system at Spring Island. See, good things can happen in 2020!
