DESCRIPTION

When asked to design a contemporary home with elements of Lowcountry vernacular, architect Chris Schmitt created a fascinating compound consisting of five separate buildings; a main residence, a guest house, a work shop, a separate studio and a three-bay garage. The guest house was completed in 1998, the other buildings followed, culminating with construction of the main residence in 2004.

The award winning main residence is extraordinary not only for its innovative design, but also for the quality of materials and craftsmanship. Perfectly proportioned details, balance and scale all create a home with enormous visual appeal.

The home’s great room features high ceilings, exposed trusses and tall windows which flood the room with light. The gourmet kitchen, sun room and dining room all have views of Rice Gate Pond with easy access to the adjoin outdoor living space. The spacious ground floor master bedroom has direct access to a private outdoor spa and shower. Two beautifully appointed bedrooms are located on the second floor.

The guest house living room echoes the distinctive inverted roof of the main house sun room, with floor-to-ceiling glass and wonderful views of the surrounding forest. A small kitchen and dining area and two bedrooms and baths make this a private yet inviting place for visitors.

Not to be overlooked is an exceptional landscape plan created by the highly regarded landscape architect Thomas Angell who artfully combines formal landscaping with the natural beauty of Spring Island.
